Make sure your Super Bowl party guests are comfortable, happy and most important – SAFE!
YAY PANTHERS! So are you planning a big party to celebrate the Carolina Panthers?! Having a safe Super Bowl party is something that most folks do not really contemplate but there are certain factors that will come into play as you plan your event. The distraction of having a houseful of guests is a leading cause of home accidents and fires. You might be so busy hosting and cooking great food that you can’t adequately monitor the stove, the kids that are running around, the outdoor fire pit, etc. Everyone’s looking at the television and no one is paying attention to the potential safety hazards all around. You get the picture!
Then… add alcoholic beverages to the mix! It’s a recipe for fun and laughter, right? Let’s keep this positive and say YES! Superbowl parties are fun and, for many folks, serving beer or wine is part of the tradition. So, here are some tips for having aSAFE Super Bowl party that includes delicious food, loud cheers, fun times and even a moderate mix of the ‘spirits’ if that is part of your tradition.
- Offer some refreshing nonalcoholic beverages. Make the nonalcoholic drinks as appealing and festive as the beer and wine. Try a nonalcoholic grape juice packaged like wine, or a refreshing punch served in a large container inviting guests to quench their thirst on those beverages, instead. Make sure plenty of sodas, bottled waters and other nonalcoholic options are stocked at your bar for guests.
- Serve plenty of food. Super Bowl parties are not complete without generous servings of food. Make sure the food is accessible to the drinkers because everyone knows what happens when you drink too much and don’t eat enough. If guests are having alcoholic beverages, they need to be snacking also.
- Avoid drinking too much, even if YOU are the host. Sure, you won’t be driving anywhere… the party is at your home! But, you’ll need to be responsible and attentive to your guests, monitoring them to make sure they are drinking responsibly. It is also your responsibility to monitor the bar and make sure that water and sodas are an option so that guests will not drink too much alcohol, and also make sure your guests are getting plenty of food.
- Make sure the guests who drink at your party have a designated driver. Go ahead and mention it ahead of time. Let your guests know that if they drink at your home, you expect them to arrange a safe ride home. Then they’ll know upfront that you will be aware of the drinking activity and making sure your party is the safest one on the block! Blame it on your insurance agency! Tell your guests that you read about it on our website – the Insurance Information Institute suggests that homeowners take safety precautions if they are hosting a Super Bowl party. Remind guests to wear their seat belts and avoid texting on their phones, also. The excitement of a big event like the Super Bowl can get people really pumped up and excited. When enjoying a fun time or celebrating, people can get distracted, rushed, and do things that are outside of our normal routine.
This is a reminder to slow down, relax, and remind your party guests to think about safety and comfort while celebrating the Super Bowl event – especially if you’re the host! In that case it’s your RESPONSIBILITY to make sure your guests are as safe as possible while cheering on the Panthers. At Waxhaw Insurance Agency we hope everyone is enjoying this exciting NFL season!
